Critical Phenomena at Interfaces Phase Transitions at Quantum Surfaces
Tlre qnantum systems helium and hydrogen provide a versatile testing ground for studying interfacial phenomena. As examples, both some properties of surface< near thermodynamic equilibrium, like layering and wetting, and uonequilibrium states of qucnch-condensed disordered films are discussed. A further topic is the development of macroscopic instabilities of interfaces under external perturbat...
متن کاملSurface State Electrons on a Hydrogen Film. 2. Influence of Adsorbed Helium Films
We have investigated the conductivity of surface state electrons on liquid 4He films supported by a quench-condensed thin solid hydrogen substrate. A pronounced dip in the ac-conductivity was observed as the He film thickness reached about 10 layers. This phenomenon was studied at different temperatures (range between 1.6 and 210, electron densities from 0.9 to 19x10S cm -2, frequencies between...
متن کاملPossible Correlation Effects of Surface State Electrons on a Solid Hydrogen Film
Surface state electrons (SSE) on cryogenic surfaces such as helium, hydrogen and neon have been receiving continuous attention over the past years 1. They have been used as surface probes 2,3, but there is also major interest in the properties of the 2-dimensional electron system itself. High electron densities can be reached on solid substrates which furthermore allow to study the effects of v...
متن کاملElectrons at the Surface of Quantum Systems
Electrons can be trapped at the surfaces and interfaces of the condensed phases of quantum matter (in particular hydrogen and helium), where they form classical two-dimensional Coulomb systems. Apart from studying the intrinsic properties of these nearly ideal systems, like the transition from an electron gas to a Wigner solid, one can use the electrons also as a sensitive probe to investigate ...
متن کاملTheory of first-order layering transitions in thin helium films.
Thin liquid He films on graphite show evidence of layered growth with increasing number density via a succession of first-order phase transitions. These so-called ‘‘layering transitions’’ separate uniformly covering phases, such as monolayers and bilayers. The present work is a detailed theoretical study of such layering transitions using a Maxwell construction. We model the graphite surface by...
